Guest blog: Tam from inprogress
April 9, 2009 – 12:36 amSo today I am swapping posts with Tam over at inprogress. I know tam and her husband brent through a mutual friend Josh. They are the ‘real deal’ when it comes to incredibly inspiring stories of honest relationships (marriage or otherwise) and real worship.
…I’ll shut up now so you can read : )
**********************************************************************************
hi! my name is tam from inprogress. each thursday i swap blog posts with another blogger. jason called shot gun right out of the gates, so… i made sure he didnt get the first swap. thats the mean mom in me.
thanks jason for letting me spew mindless things here!
ive always thought it was funny that jason calls himself the worst blogger. im not sure what would define the “worst” of us bloggers, but i sure wouldnt say jason is the worst! maybe…3rd or 4th, but definitely not the worst. i kid!
anyway…jason, i dont know how long youve been blogging, but ive been at it for only a year and a half now and ive noticed a lot of changes in the blogworld. namely…fallen stats. have you all noticed this?
ive talked to several of my friends who have found the same thing with their blogs. there seems to be no rhyme (i had to pause to remember how to spell rhyme. OH! paused again!) or reason to it. none that we know of at least.
do you all have any ideas? is it just getting old? do we suck? maybe its twitter? perhaps twitter is taking over?
if you had to stop blogging or twittering, which would you drop? why?
for those of you who dont twitter (shame on you) what one online source of creative communication would you stick with? and why that one?

I had to quit blogging on my actual site because a certain point came where I realized I need to stop writing about what I think is worth writing about and find something a group of people enjoy reading about! Henceforth I blog about video games haha. I blame the facebook/twitter revolution…everyone knows whats up already the second it happens! It doesn’t give bloggers a chance >_<

I’m new to all this, so I’ve no idea.
My personal stats are as high as they’ve ever been (including the day Carlos HTd me back in Jan on my 10th post or something), but that’s not saying much because I’d venture to say it’s <1% of your traffic Tam
It’s fun to blame Twitter though, especially since it’s probably getting sold…

dang kyle. now I want to close up shop forever around here! lol

My stats were never impressive to begin with, so….
But I’d give up Twitter WAY before I’d give up blogging. I’m not so much a Twitter fan. Maybe I’m too old?
By Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect on Apr 9, 2009
kyle, wow! i think that article is right on.
ive thought about pulling the plug several times recently. the thing is, i have a committed chore group of readers/friends whom i value greatly! they are what keep me going…for now.
but i agree, if you blog to compete…bow out now, fo sho!
so whats gonna happen to twitter in a few years? especially if google takes them over?
ke3bZ - what did you write about before you switched to video game content writing?
david - what did carlos HT??? i wanna know
and trust me, my stats arent at all impressive.
By tam on Apr 9, 2009
mary - youre not too old! stop that
see tho, mary, you are a brilliant writer. you need to keep blogging cuz there isnt as much of that good and creative writing out there now…so im glad youd keep your blog going!

I am a writer at heart and 140 characters at a time is hard to get alot of points across. My blog post today would have taken to many tweets.
Twitter could go, but I would miss the conversation.
By ckroboth on Apr 9, 2009
I’d probably forego the tweets before I gave up my blog.
By Russ Hutto on Apr 9, 2009
ck - one of the things ive gained, personally, from twitter is being able to cut to the chase. actually…ive always been a pretty matter of fact girl…but now i have to be very precise if communicating a thought thru twitter. i like that. which means, however, that when i write a post there seems to be so much more freedom…only…i forget that i can elaborate more, ya know?
russ - i would cry if you dumped your blog. youre too creative not to have that outlet.
By tam on Apr 9, 2009
I think it’s Twitter for sure…
… but in my world, I had to cut out a chunk of blogs I USED to read but no longer have time for. I’m sure later in life, I’ll have a bit more freedom to get back to those.
However, I’m happy to say that I still read both of your blogs (Jason & Tam) religiously… though I may not always have time to comment.
Lame… I know…
… but we all know it’s because I’m that crazy Asian umbrella lady.
By Jenni Clayville on Apr 9, 2009
no. youre just a crazy, shady asian.
By tam on Apr 9, 2009
but jenni - you bring up a good point….i, too, read lots of blogs, i just dont always comment. and blogging is a lot like…you scratch my back, i’ll scratch yours…so if im not commenting much or regularly on others, why would they comment on mine, ya know?
its so much work.
By tam on Apr 9, 2009
Tam,
I would give up blogging before twitter now. Mainly because I am not much of a writer and 140 characters is usually enough for me. I don’t take time to read a lot of blogs so I can’t expect a lot of people to read mine i guess.
The stats are down because so many people are blogging and twittering that readership shifts around to where they find the most intrigue. It will be up down from now on.

brian - youre on to something. theres so much vying for our attention that it leaves everybody at different places all the time. hmmm…good point.

______________
I was pretty into blogging about music.
Bands that branched from others, cover bands, bands that broke up after an amazing album etc. Then again, as you saw on your blog today, my tambourine skills don’t give me much room to judge others hehe.
Also, movies and TV shows were on there too ^_^

I had a successful blog going for two years. Lots of hits, and a ton of comments. Here was the problem with what I had going…I’m a pastor here at CedarCreek and we have 8,000 people a weekend attending. I normally had more of a debate blog going…anything from theology to Oprah to global warming. The haters came out of the woodwork faster than I could get them under control.
I know everyone shares a microphone in the blogosphere, but it tends to be an angry one, misguided much of the time. While everyone gets the pulpit (and rightly so) in a blog - they were using mine to argue their points because they had no traffic on theirs. Why?? Because no one wanted to listen to them, not because they had an opposing view, but because they had no sense of tact.
Light hearted blogs seem to be OK, I also enjoy catching up on other pastor’s blogs around the nation…closed blogs that you can’t comment on.
Right or wrong - everyone has the mic. I realized that not everyone deserved the mic. It seems so many people these days have a lot to say, they just can’t get anyone to listen. People only truly listen when they respect you. There was too much anonymity in the comments. They could say whatever they wanted under some fictitious name. I, on the other hand, had to take the high road because I was the only one with my name all over the place. That’s a good practice to learn…just not at the expense of all the negativity. It wears on you.
Facebook and Twitter let me choose who I bring in. Selfish or not, it seems like it’s easier to advance the kingdom through these means.
Everyone has the mic, but I don’t think everyone knows how to use it:)

“I’m one of those guys who was secretly hoping Y2K would happen and eliminate applications like twitter. Sorry!”
NATE! bad. very, very bad.
ke3bz - i thought your tambourine playing was quite skillful. all 2 and 3/4 seconds of it!
kyle - i didnt debate your post on public bathrooms going all automatic cuz we’re so lazy. that was you, right? i loved that post!
i totally hear ya. and i fully agree with you too. there was a time on my blog where that was happening a bit much. it seems people would rather fight against something, rather than stand FOR something with tact and respect. there was also a lot of scripture wars going on in my comment section for awhile too. one person would say what they believe and another would come and demand scripture to back up why they believe in, say…”free will”. mind you, these demands were coming from other believers. it always turned into “believers” not Believing in the right thing and leaning too much on their egos and defenses. so…i stopped posting a lot about scripture. which makes me sad. but i just dont want people fighting over non-essentials. its stupid.
all this to say… i understand kyle…and im bummed it came to that.

one form of online communcation?
eek!
that’s a hard one.
I suppose I’d stick with my blog, because it’s where I get the most creative release!
TWITTER comes close behind in second, not for creativity but for community!!
I guess I feel I NEED to have that creative release more than I need an online community, go figure.
THX for another great post Tam, love ya!

@tam - Carlos HTd this. My first “I’m a sap” post…hahaha.

You actually commented on it
Thought quite a few more commented on it over here…(though it’s linked to my not-so-sadly departed blogger blog)

I never actually answered the question either…
I’d stick with Twitter I think, and let me creative outlet live on somewhere else…like maybe Facebook.
Wonderig if I should link my FB status to my tweets… Hmmm, might need to ask the twitterverse what they think (Brent’s post on the matter notwithstanding)
By David on Apr 10, 2009
i twitter not.
i’m sticking with blogging. writing is the cheapest form of therapy. and the relationship side, the true community i’ve found there, is matchless for me.
